Honored by AIA New York State Design Awards across commercial, residential and retail sectors
Hublot, 5th Avenue - Award of Excellence
Commissioned to provide a platform for Swiss watchmaker Hublot within the prominent and high traffic corridor of 5th Avenue and 57th street in New York City, the 800 sq ft store with its 85’ façade provides a new flagship location and vibrant addition to the luxury fashion powerhouse characteristic of the retail district. The project’s scale reflects the typically narrow and deep lots – the sculptural building is carefully inserted into a slim site. Extending the brand’s presence from the inside out, the façade abstracts the notion of time, movement and the perpetual mechanism of the watch with powder coated stock aluminum extrusions positioned at varying angles. Vertical LED light strips are embedded in the façade and purposefully staggered, furthering the impression of motion.
Southampton House - Award of Merit
The 3,400 sqf single family residence is located on a narrow bay-side site. In response to the client’s desire to minimize site interventions and maximize views of the surrounding bay and landscape, ‘Southampton House’ was conceived as an elegant ‘glass container’ atop stone plinths. Tightly positioned between Shinnecock Bay and an adjacent road with a portion of the ground unstable due to wetlands, the buildable area was very constrained. Setback requirements by the DEC for the protection of the wetlands, coupled with property line setbacks and privacy considerations, further limited the buildable footprint. The elevated platform of the residence satisfies FEMA floodplain regulations and allows the ground plane to continue nearly uninterrupted from the road to the bay while framing the water with architecture. The long span between the stone plinths underneath the elevated platform sponsors a generous ground level outdoor living area, protected by cantilevers on all four sides that act as balconies on the upper level. Exterior steel and stone stairs connect the two levels.
Dior Seoul - Award of Citation
Prominently positioned on a corner in the Gangnam-Gu district in Seoul and in the midst of luxury retail powerhouses is a new 957 sq m flagship for Dior. This six floor location combines the heritage of the brand headquarters on Avenue Montaigne in Paris with a new interior concept introduced and designed in response to the immediate context and clientele of modern Seoul. The existing façade resulted in unique interior volumes and we utilized this challenge as an opportunity to evolve the brand vision and architectural concept for Dior. The Seoul flagship brings the sense of movement and play to the interior, using this notion as a defining thread and design concept throughout the boutique as it continues the sculptural shapes. The undulating aluminum clad curtainwall adjacent to the entry, which is comprised of reflective white plates, functions to draw clientele into the store and through the space. The spiral stair of glass and steel connects all six floors.
